Check Vehicles

To find the right diesel exhaust fluid transfer tanks, you should check how many and what kind of vehicles will be using the tanks. This will help calculate the right volume. Moreover, different vehicles have different specifications. If you are looking at buying for both tractors and trucks, make sure to separate the number of tractors from the number of trucks.

For Trucks

To find the annual number of miles, check the number of years and the number of miles that the truck drove. Once you have the number of years and the number of miles, divide the number of miles by the number of years. This will give you an estimate of how many miles the vehicle drives per year. For multiple vehicles, repeat the step, add up the annual miles driven for all vehicles, and divide by the number of trucks. The result will be the average annual number of miles.

Finding the average miles per gallon is the last step. To do this, keep track of how many gallons you use and how many miles you drive. Then, divide the number of miles by the number of gallons. The result will be the average number of miles per gallon. Repeat this step for every other vehicle, add the resulting number, and divide by the number of vehicles.

For Tractors

To find the average number of hours per tractor, find how many hours each vehicle was used. Then, take the total number of hours and divide it by the number of tractors. This will give you an estimate of the average hours per vehicle.

For fuel usage, find out how much fuel was used per hour. Like trucks, track how much fuel is used per work day. Take the number of gallons and divide it by the number of hours. The resulting number will be an estimate of how much fuel is used per hour.

Find the DEF Usage Rate

On average, engines consume 2-3% of DEF per gallon of diesel. For every 100 gallons, 2-3 gallons of DEF will be consumed. A high estimate of a DEF usage rate is 3% and a low estimate of a DEF usage rate is 2%.

Use a DEF Calculator

Having found all the appropriate numbers, input the resulting numbers into a DEF calculator. The result should be how many gallons of DEF were consumed that year. From there, you should be able to determine what diesel exhaust fluid storage tanks are right for your company.
